Ruwandeniya is about 85 kilometers away from the capital Colombo and about 30 kilometers away from the ancient city of Kandy. At the beginning of the design, Ruwandeniya made bold innovations in the overall planning and the house. The design adopts a four-family house, which was well-proportioned, plus the planned second phase of 40 houses and supporting facilities, including libraries and activity rooms, which would form a complete small community and completely changes the traditional lifestyle of local residents with single-family homes.

The new community-based lifestyle can not only rationally utilize and save limited land resources, but also help enhance harmonious relations among neighbors and create a harmonious and stable social environment. In May 2016, a severe mudslide occurred in Aranayake. Many families were destroyed in the mudslide and were forced to live in temporary resettlement shelters with poor conditions. They are eagerly awaiting the early completion of Ruwandeniya.

The completion of Ruwandeniya not only provides permanent homes for local disaster victims, but more importantly, helps the victims stay away from the impact of mudslides, gradually emerge from the shadow of mudslides, and live a new, more harmonious life.
